Overview

Google Translate is Google’s consumer machine-translation product. It launched on 28 April 2006, moved to neural MT in 2016, and in December 2025 began rolling Gemini-based text translation on selected pairs. Cross-border sellers actually use it to draft titles and bullets, read buyer mail, compare a competitor’s detail page, and show an English spec to a factory. The web app, Chrome extension, and Android/iOS apps are the daily surfaces.

It is not a multilingual storefront. Language URLs and hreflang belong to Weglot or Shopify Markets. Translate owns the sentence, not whether /de is a crawlable store. The free web box has no enforceable glossary; locking brand names, fabric names, and restricted claims requires the Cloud Translation API (Advanced).

The URL sellers should bookmark in 2026 is translate.google.com, not translate.google.cn. On 2026-09-06 the .cn host was a static landing card that pointed at translate.google.com.hk, not the product. Google ended its mainland China translation service in October 2022; on a mainland connection the website and the app’s online mode usually fail. Offline language packs still cover typed text and some camera use. For operators who cannot leave the mainland network, Youdao Translate is the tool that opens.

Paste on the left, read the right-hand output, with optional auto-detect. 2026 third-party writeups still cite about 5,000 characters per web request; confirm the live cap in the box. Document translation covers common Office files and PDF (third parties mention ~10 MB and ~300 PDF pages — check in-product). The “Websites” mode renders a translated view of someone else’s URL. That is useful for reading a supplier site. It is not multilingual SEO for your own theme.

Camera, conversation, and offline packs

The mobile camera overlay, conversation mode, and offline packs help on a factory floor or at a 3PL, not in Seller Central. Offline packs work on a plane and on a mainland connection; voice and conversation still need Google’s servers. Coverage is the real edge versus DeepL: public tallies in late 2025 put the language list around 249. Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, and Hindi first drafts are why sellers keep this tab open.

Cloud Translation API and glossaries

The consumer site will not keep “lead time” or an INCI name identical across 400 SKUs. Cloud Translation Advanced adds glossaries, batch jobs, document pages, and custom models. Official pricing on cloud.google.com/translate/pricing (rechecked 2026-09-06): NMT is free for the first 500,000 characters per month, then about $20 per million; document translation is about $0.08 per page. Translation LLM bills input plus output; Google describes it as cost-equivalent to NMT. HTML tags and whitespace count. This is a Cloud invoice, not a “Translate Pro” button.

Who it's for

Solo / small teams drafting long-tail locales (Thai, Vietnamese, Arabic, Portuguese) that DeepL does not cover well. The free web app is enough.
Support reading tickets before a human replies. Do not send raw MT to a DE/US buyer as the official answer.
Developers / mid-size ops syncing catalogs or helpdesks through Cloud Translation with a glossary file.
Skip as the only tool if you need strong European first drafts (DeepL), crawlable storefront languages (Weglot), or you work only on a mainland China network (Youdao/Baidu).

Concrete use case: before opening Amazon.de, run German bullets through Translate, hand-lock brand, material, and certificate abbreviations, then pay a German freelancer 20 minutes on the five hero ASINs. Do not embed the retired Translate website widget and expect those pages to rank.

Pricing and value

The consumer website, apps, and extension are free. There is no Google Translate subscription. You pay in caps, missing team glossaries, and whatever the in-product privacy text says about improving the service.

Glossaries, bulk, and contract-style processing are Cloud Translation. The 500,000-character monthly free tier is enough to trial a small catalog. 1,000 titles × 200 characters × 5 locales is about a million characters — after the free slice, NMT is tens of dollars, not hundreds, if that volume is real. Confirm on the invoice. Do not confuse the consumer site with the API free tier.

Community feedback

r/translator and language subreddits have said for years that DeepL wins European nuance and Google wins coverage plus camera/offline. Seller threads rarely treat Translate as an FBA staple; the line is “read it, then hire a native.” 2026 travel and 外贸 notes repeat that online Translate is dead on a mainland connection and that offline packs must be downloaded before you fly. Vendor blind tests are marketing. On JA/ZH, some operators prefer an LLM or DeepL; Google remains the long-tail fallback.

There is no Keepa-scale “Translate for FBA” forum. Support is Google Account help, not a seller desk.

Competitive positioning

DeepL: better European first pass and paid glossaries, far fewer languages. Google is breadth and camera.

Youdao / Baidu: Chinese UX, reachable from the mainland. They are not why a German shopper converts.

Weglot: storefront layer that may call Google or DeepL as an engine. If you need language URLs, Weglot is the product; translate.google.com is not.

Limitations

Online access from mainland China is unreliable or blocked. The consumer product has no catalog-grade glossary. MT omits clauses, flattens tone, and can “pretty-up” restricted claims. It will not invent marketplace search terms. Website compare does not give you indexable language folders. API billing counts HTML. Gemini upgrades roll out by region and pair; do not assume every language already uses the new engine.

Verdict

Use Google Translate in 2026 for long-tail languages, fast comprehension, and camera/offline. Do not use it as a storefront translator, and do not bookmark translate.google.cn. For DE/FR hero copy, try DeepL first; for office work inside China, use Youdao.
