Overview

DHgate (敦煌网) is a China-origin marketplace that sits between wholesale RFQs and small-parcel retail. Cross-border teams use it in two directions: buy from factories and trading companies (often as a cheaper, messier Alibaba.com alternative) and sell outbound to overseas small retailers and consumers. This entry is for those operators — onboarding, platform fees, commissions, fulfillment — not a coupon page for shoppers.

The seller path is not “free to open.” After phone and email activation, every account is told to pay a platform usage fee (平台使用费) before identity verification. Official Help Center FAQ (updated 18 May 2026) lists 启航 (starter) at ¥898 / six months or ¥1399 / year, 星航 at ¥6666 / year, and 星辰 at ¥8868 / year, paid in-backend via Alipay. If you do not renew, products are delisted and you cannot upload. Commission is separate and tiered by order amount and category; the platform rules describe bands such as under $300, $300–$1,000, and $1,000+, with a Blue Ocean (蓝海) program that can cut those rates for qualifying factories and brands.

Quality, disputes, and logistics are the reputation tax. Reddit dropship threads and buyer forums still treat DHgate as “inspect before you scale.” If you only need a clean B2B storefront, Alibaba.com is the usual comparison. If you need a US retail door, Amazon or Wish (with Wish’s own 2024–2026 caveats) are different jobs.

Typical flow on seller.dhgate.com: register → pay platform fee → identity verification (business license / individual docs) → bind categories → list (new shops are often asked for a minimum number of SKUs). Help Center says category opening itself is not extra; the shop fee is. Failed verification can refund the platform fee; passed verification is non-refundable. Multi-account shops each pay.

English buyers see dhgate.com; Chinese sellers work in the seller center. Messaging, disputes, and logistics templates live there. DHgate also runs promotions, on-site ads, and optional consignment-style programs — all after the shop is live, not instead of the annual fee.

Commissions and Blue Ocean

Platform rules (seller policy text) describe ladder commissions: examples in that document include roughly 12.5%–25% on orders under $300, 4%–8% from $300 to under $1,000, and 0.15%–3.5% at $1,000+, with special rows for some partner categories. Exact SKU rates are in the seller backend and move.

蓝海 (Blue Ocean) (pages updated 2026) is a recruitment track for brands, factories, and traders who meet GMV/identity bars: 蓝海新星 often 8% below $1,000 and 0.5% at/above; 蓝海星云 3%–5% below $1,000 and 0.5% at/above, plus faster withdrawal (T+1 is advertised) and deposit waivers. Sourcing, selling, and fulfillment

As a buyer/sourcer, you use search, MOQ, and chat to sample — then you still need inspection, because listing photos lie. As a seller, you ship small parcels or wholesale cartons; DDP vs DAP matters for EU 2026 duty changes (the €150 de minimis path is going away). DHgate is not FBA/WFS. You arrange the label. Payment is platform escrow-style: funds release after delivery windows and dispute rules (Help notes non-VIP vs VIP hold days, and unpaid platform fees delay release).

Supported platforms

dhgate.com (global buyer site) and the seller center. It is not Amazon, not 1688’s domestic wholesale UI, and not AliExpress consumer-only. Some sellers also use DHgate demand as a lead into their own export. Ads and “traffic boost” SKUs are add-ons inside the seller center.

Concrete use case: a Yiwu hardware shop pays 启航 ¥1399, lists 80 SKUs, prices a $40 order knowing a sub-$300 band may take a double-digit commission, offers tracked shipping, and uses the first 20 orders as quality control for a later Amazon inbound. They do not treat a $200 first order as proof the factory can do 2,000 units for FBA.

Pricing and value

Budget: platform fee every cycle + per-order commission + optional ads + logistics + dispute reserves. Starter annual ¥1399 is cheap versus a missed FBA shipment; it is not cheap if the shop never converts. High-ticket wholesale is where the ladder helps (rates drop a lot above $1,000). Low-ASP jewelry-style SKUs can sit in the expensive band — read your category row.

Value is China-origin wholesale plus small-parcel checkout in one login. It is not a substitute for Alibaba.com’s larger buyer RFQ base, and it is not a US retail brand.

Community feedback

Buyer communities (Reddit dropshipping, review sites) hammer inconsistent quality, slow disputes, and long ship times. Seller-side Chinese coverage (雨果网-style roundups and the official FAQ) is more operational: pay the fee, bind the right category, watch deposit and withdrawal clocks. There is less of a global “DHgate seller subreddit” than for Amazon; treat that as a signal that English-language peer support is thin.

Competitive positioning

Alibaba International Station is the B2B default for serious importers. Amazon is the B2C default for US/EU brands. Wish is another cheap-parcel app with worse 2024–2026 ownership noise. DHgate’s niche is hybrid MOQ: smaller than a classic Alibaba order, more wholesale than a pure Amazon listing.

Limitations

Platform fee is mandatory and recurring. Commission ladders are easy to under-model on cheap items. Buyer quality complaints are common. English seller documentation is thinner than the Chinese Help Center. No first-party US two-day network. Trademark enforcement still sits on you. Expired platform fees freeze listing tools.

Verdict

Use DHgate as a China export + sourcing hybrid: pay the published platform fee, price to the live commission band, inspect product, and keep Amazon/Alibaba as the real scale doors. Do not confuse dhgate.com coupons with a seller P&L.
