Overview

Chewy is a U.S. pet retailer, not an open marketplace you can self-list like Amazon. The main path for a brand is 1P vendor: Chewy buys at wholesale, owns the inventory, sets retail, fulfills, and runs customer service. Shoppers see Chewy as the seller. A smaller 3P / drop-ship path exists: you keep the stock and ship from your U.S. warehouse or 3PL through the Vendor Partner Portal (vpp.chewy.com). Category managers approve partners. There is no public “open a Chewy store” flow.

Cross-border sellers should treat that as the product, not a footnote. Chewy’s lock-in is Autoship and service, not third-party ads. Pet food and pharmacy SKUs sit under AAFCO, FDA, and related rules. Without a U.S. entity, U.S. fulfillment, and a merchant relationship, Chewy is not “Amazon #2.” Retail traffic studies put Chewy as the specialist pet destination after Amazon in the U.S.; the front door for vendors is still narrow.

1P wholesale: POs into Chewy DCs

1P is classic retail supply. Chewy sends purchase orders; you ship to Chewy fulfillment centers on their routing guide; they sell to the pet parent. Chewy controls price, promos, returns, and service. Agency write-ups often describe pet wholesale as roughly 35–45% off retail — not an official rate card; you negotiate with the category manager. Payment terms are commonly net 30–60. EDI (850/856/810 and related) is effectively required for a live vendor; the portal is for exceptions and very low volume.

3P drop-ship: smaller, curated

Drop-ship keeps title with the brand. A Chewy customer order is fulfilled by you or a 3PL. Chinese seller media also describe an import / factory-direct variant (Chewy inspects, EXW/FOB). 3P is not an open marketplace: apply or get invited, then hit Chewy’s SLA, pack, and branding rules. It fits long-tail or oversize SKUs that do not earn DC space. It does not mean “send FBA inventory to Chewy customers.”

Autoship and vendor ads

Autoship is the repeat engine. Food and consumables that land on subscription behave more like replenishment than one-click traffic. Chewy also sells on-site ads to brand partners (called out in its filings). You are not decorating your own storefront; you are supplying a retailer with a subscription habit.

Supported platforms

chewy.com and the app serve U.S. shoppers. Vendors work in the Vendor Partner Portal, not Seller Central. Chewy is not Shopify, eBay, or Temu. Some China-facing write-ups mention a Chewy factory team and Payoneer payouts — treat the portal and the contract as source of truth. Fulfillment is U.S. warehouse or Chewy’s network. Do not assume FBA can ship Chewy orders.

Branded pet food / supplies that can talk wholesale, MAP, and co-op.
Mid-size+ teams with a U.S. entity and warehouse that can run EDI, POs, and chargebacks.
Factories only via Chewy’s import / inspection programs, not as casual 3P.
Skip it if you are unbranded, Amazon-only arbitrage, have no U.S. company/EIN, cannot take wholesale margin and terms, or expected an open marketplace.

Concrete use case: a pet brand already selling on Amazon prepares a U.S. entity, UPCs, and formula/safety files, then asks a category manager (or VPP) for 1P on hero SKUs to test Autoship. Long-tail goes drop-ship only if the SLA is real. If freight-to-Chewy plus wholesale leaves contribution below your hurdle rate, do not add the channel for the logo.

Pricing and value

Chewy does not publish a public seller commission table. 1P has no Amazon-style Professional monthly fee; the gap is wholesale vs retail, plus possible co-op, promo deductions, damage, and compliance chargebacks. 3P drop-ship takes a referral-style cut — rate is in the contract, not in a public help article.

There is no public annual “store fee” menu. Cost is U.S. warehousing or inbound to Chewy, EDI, insurance, and cash tied in terms. Autoship food can make 1P volume worth the margin; low-AOV toys often do not survive terms and returns. Get the terms in writing from the merchant.

Community feedback

Seller discussion is thinner than Amazon’s. Reddit’s Chewy threads are mostly Autoship customers and service, not vendors. Agency posts (1P vs 3P) describe Chewy 1P as closer to Costco or Target: you manage a category manager, you do not “list and go.” Chinese cross-border roundups list drop-ship, wholesale, and import, and flag 60–90 day terms plus food certifications. There is no single public review score to cite. What is consistent: this is not self-serve onboarding, and ops will be slower than Seller Central.

Competitive positioning

Chewy’s moat is pet vertical plus Autoship, not catalog breadth. Amazon’s pet aisle is larger and 3P is open. Walmart and Target are general merchandise; pet is one shelf. If you can only compete as unbranded marketplace fill, Chewy is the wrong next step.

Limitations

Cross-border sellers without a U.S. entity and warehouse do not get in. Autoship success also amplifies stock-outs and promo pressure.

Verdict

Branded pet companies with U.S. fulfillment and wholesale math should treat Chewy as a core 1P account. Treating it as an Amazon-style open market for unbranded fill will stall at application.
