Overview

Keyword Surfer is Surfer’s free Chrome overlay for Google search results. Cross-border sellers use it when they are naming an independent-store SKU, a blog/collection page, or a Google Ads group and want monthly search volume, CPC, and related ideas without opening Google Keyword Planner or paying for Surfer. Official docs: no Surfer account is required for the keyword panel. It is not Amazon, eBay, or TikTok search volume.

You search Google as usual. The extension adds volume on the query, a side list of related terms with volume and a similarity/overlap score (how much the organic SERP overlaps), plus on-page clues such as estimated traffic and competitor word count. Collections let you tick phrases and export a CSV. Surfer’s product page (checked 2026-09-06) still markets it as 100% free and claims 70 countries. Chrome Web Store listing: version 6.5.1, updated 29 January 2026, about 600,000 users and 4.2/5 from ~1,000 ratings—treat those as store figures.

It is a SERP companion, not a content suite. Surfer’s paid Content Editor, audits, and the ChatGPT “Humanizer” (docs say that piece needs an active Surfer plan) are separate. If you only sell on Amazon and never buy Google traffic, skip it.

Core features and advantages

Volume, CPC, and related ideas on the SERP

The job is to stay on google.com. After a search you see estimated monthly volume for the query and a related-keyword list with volume and overlap. That is how you decide whether “silicone baby plate” is worth a US collection page before you brief a writer. CPC on the same panel is a Google-ads-shaped cost hint, not your Amazon PPC bid.

Collections and CSV export

Tick phrases into folders, then download CSV. Solo sellers use this to build a first Google keyword list without a Semrush project. It does not cluster intent, score keyword difficulty, or track rank.

Country switcher and on-page SERP stats

Official docs list 70 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, France, India, Brazil, and the UAE. Switch location before you treat a number as “your” market. The SERP also shows estimated organic traffic and word count on ranking URLs—useful as a first-pass content length check, not as Ahrefs.

Supported platforms

Google Search in Chrome is the supported workflow. Docs recommend Chrome; Chromium browsers (Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc) may work but are not guaranteed after updates. There is no Safari or mobile app. Data is Google-side. It does not read Amazon Brand Analytics, eBay, Walmart, or TikTok Shop.

Who it's for

  • Independent-store and Google Ads sellers who live in the SERP and need a free first pass before Planner.
  • Amazon/eBay sellers adding a Shopify or landing page who want to know whether the English (or local-language) product name has Google demand.
  • Skip it if you only need Amazon search terms, if you work mainly in queries the database misses (Chrome reviews in 2026 still report “Unlucky… No results found”), or if you expected Surfer’s paid editor for free.

Concrete use case: you are launching a DE Shopify page for a kitchen gadget already on Amazon.de. Set Keyword Surfer to Germany, search the German and English names, export related terms with volume, then confirm ranges in Keyword Planner with location = Germany. Do not paste those numbers into Amazon ads.

Pricing and value

The keyword overlay is free. Official page: “It’s 100% Free. Forever.” No credit card, no Surfer login for search volume and ideas. The ChatGPT Humanizer inside the same extension is not free—Surfer docs require an active Surfer subscription. Paid Surfer plans (Content Editor and the rest) are a different product; check surferseo.com/pricing if you outgrow the overlay.

For most sellers the value is “don’t pay for volume on a SERP you already use.” When you need bulk lists, difficulty, or first-party Ads forecasts, move to Planner or a paid desk.

Community feedback

Chrome Web Store reviews (2026) split: many call it a must-have free SERP desk; others say data does not load and they only get “No results found.” Surfer’s own troubleshooting article lists typos, low-volume/fresh terms, and missing database rows as reasons. r/SEO and marketing roundups still list it as the usual free SERP overlay next to MozBar. Amazon FBA subreddits almost never treat it as listing infrastructure. Support: live chat in Surfer docs, or support@surferseo.com. X: @surfer_seo.

Competitive positioning

Keyword Planner is first-party and lives in Ads (often ranges with no spend). Keywords Everywhere overlays more sites—including Amazon pages—but Google volume on those pages is still Google’s, and paid credits are annual. Wordtracker is a paid expansion desk, not a SERP overlay. Keyword Surfer’s pitch is free, no account, on Google only.

Alternatives

Limitations

Not Amazon search volume. Database gaps on long-tail and some non-English queries. Traffic estimates are not real-time (Surfer docs: roughly quarterly). Chrome-first. Not a rank tracker, site crawler, or listing optimizer. Similarity score is SERP overlap, not keyword difficulty. Vendor “700,000+ daily users” is a marketing claim, unverified independently.

Verdict

Install it if you already Google product names for an independent store or Shopping campaign. Use the country switcher, export a shortlist, then confirm in Keyword Planner. Do not use it as an Amazon keyword tool, and do not confuse the free overlay with paid Surfer.

Next step: add the extension from surferseo.com/keyword-surfer-extension or the Chrome Web Store, set your target country, and search one product name.
