Overview

Wordtracker is a London-based keyword research tool (Mike and Andy Mindel, 1998) for search marketers who need seed-to-list expansion, competition metrics, and rank lists without buying a full Ahrefs- or Semrush-sized suite. Cross-border sellers use it on the Google side of the business: independent-store SEO, Google Ads copy, and content that has to match how shoppers type in a target country — not as an Amazon listing keyword miner.

The product is a web keyword tool plus an API and reports. Metrics on a result row include volume (counts in Wordtracker’s own database, not a Google Ads screenshot), competition, IAAT (pages with the term in the title and in an external anchor), KEI (higher volume, lower competition), plus CPC and no-click style fields described in their quick-start guide. Search Console integration and domain-level keyword views sit on the paid plans.

It is not Amazon-native. For ASIN search terms you still need Seller Central reports or an Amazon-specific suite. Wordtracker’s job is the language of Google demand in the territories your plan includes.

Core features and advantages

Keyword discovery and KEI

Enter a seed or import a list (CSV, up to 50 terms on exact search across plans). Wordtracker returns related keywords with volume, competition, and KEI so you can sort for long-tail phrases that look underserved. That is useful when a US or UK independent store is choosing category copy, blog titles, or exact-match ad groups. Treat volume as Wordtracker’s index, then confirm commercial terms in Google Keyword Planner before you spend.

Competitors, ranking lists, Search Console

Paid tiers add domain competitor slots, ranking lists, and Search Console connection. The 2026 sign-up page lists Bronze / Silver / Gold with 10 / 20 / 50 domain competitors and 1 / 5 / 10 ranking lists. Use this to see which phrases a competing DTC domain already ranks for, then fill gaps in your own English (or other locale) catalog pages.

Territories and API

The current sign-up page states 200+ territories on Bronze, Silver, and Gold. An older FAQ still describes Bronze as seven countries (US, UK, AU, BR, CA, FR, DE) and Silver as a larger subset — confirm the live territory list at checkout, because the two pages disagree. The API is a separate developer product (Search and Fetch calls, self-serve documentation, limited hands-on setup support) with its own per-call pricing on wordtracker.com/api.

Supported platforms

Wordtracker is search-engine keyword data, not a marketplace plugin. It does not write Amazon listings or pull Helium 10-style Amazon search volume. Google Search Console is the first-party integration. Sellers typically export lists into ads, CMS, or a spreadsheet. Official site: wordtracker.com.

Who it's for

  • Solo and small brands running a Shopify or other independent store who want keyword lists cheaper than a full SEO platform.
  • Content / PPC freelancers who live in Google, not Seller Central.
  • Mid-size teams that already have Keyword Planner for bids and want a second opinion plus rank lists.
  • Skip it if your only channel is Amazon FBA and you need backend search terms; if you need site-crawling and backlinks; or if you expected a free-forever Amazon tool.

Concrete use case: a seller opening a US independent store for a kitchen gadget exports a seed list (“stainless garlic press”, “dishwasher safe garlic crusher”), pulls Wordtracker suggestions, drops obvious informational queries, then pastes the commercial shortlist into Keyword Planner to see bid ranges before writing collection-page copy.

Pricing and value

Verified on the official sign-up page (2026-09-06):

  • $10 first month, then the selected plan (monthly or annual).
  • Bronze: $24/month or $17/month billed yearly ($195/year) — 500 searches/day, 1,000 keyword results, 10 domain competitors, 1 ranking list, 200 ranking keyword results.
  • Silver: $69/month or $38/month yearly ($449/year) — 1,000 searches/day, 1,000 keyword results, 20 competitors, 5 ranking lists, 1,000 ranking keyword results.
  • Gold: $99/month or $54/month yearly ($640/year) — unlimited searches/day, 2,000 keyword results, 50 competitors, 10 ranking lists, 2,000 ranking keyword results.

The same page says all three plans include Search Console, domain analysis, competition metrics, and 200+ territories. Wordtracker also advertises a 30-day money-back guarantee. API pricing is separate (the API page lists a Standard plan example at $60/month with call caps — confirm there, not here). There is no Amazon-seller discount.

Value is “focused keyword tool vs all-in-one SEO.” If Keyword Planner plus a browser overlay already answers your questions, you may not need a third subscription.

Community feedback

Amazon seller subreddits barely mention Wordtracker in 2025–2026; the conversation is Keyword Planner, Helium 10, and Amazon autocomplete. SEO review sites still describe it as a long-running specialist: cheaper than Ahrefs for basic keyword work, with complaints about limited feature breadth and occasional data mismatch versus Google. Support is UK-hours email and live chat (support@wordtracker.com, +44 333 200 4555). Do not treat sparse Reddit volume as a quality score — it mainly means this is not an FBA-default tool.

Competitive positioning

Google Keyword Planner is free, first-party, and bid-oriented (with range vs exact volume depending on ad spend). Keywords Everywhere and Keyword Surfer put numbers on the SERP while you browse. Wordtracker is a standalone research desk with KEI, competitor domains, and rank lists. Ahrefs/Semrush dwarf it on backlinks and site audits.

Alternatives

Limitations

Not built for Amazon search terms. Volume is Wordtracker’s database, not a guaranteed Google Ads number. Territory copy is inconsistent between FAQ and pricing. Feature set is narrower than all-in-one SEO suites. API is self-serve. The old “free version” story in directory stubs is outdated; current access is a $10 first month plus paid tiers.

Verdict

Use Wordtracker if you run Google SEO/PPC for an independent store and want a dedicated keyword desk without Semrush prices. If you only need directional Google volume, start with Keyword Planner. If you only sell on Amazon, skip it.

Next step: read the plans on wordtracker.com/sign-up and use the $10 first month before rolling onto Bronze/Silver/Gold.

Data notes

Rechecked 2026-09-06 on wordtracker.com/sign-up, /about, /contact, /support/faq, and /api. published (2024-03-15), monthlyVisits, domainRating, and authorityScore are catalog placeholders and unverified. Founding year 1998 is first-party; exact day unverified. FAQ territory limits disagree with the 2026 sign-up page — live checkout wins. API dollar figures should be re-read on the API page before budgeting.
