Overview

Walmart Marketplace is the third-party seller program on Walmart.com. This entry is for operators who want a US retail door — Seller Center, referral fees, Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS), and cross-border inbound — not a consumer shopping guide. Shoppers still enter at walmart.com; you apply and run the store at marketplace.walmart.com / seller.walmart.com. China-based applicants also use walmartmarketplace.cn.

The commercial pitch versus Amazon is simple: no monthly subscription and no listing fee. You pay a category referral fee when an item sells, plus fulfillment (your warehouse or WFS). The catch is onboarding: Walmart wants a real business (SSN is not accepted), GTIN/UPC with a GS1 company prefix, marketplace history, and a US-capable fulfillment plan. Catalog quality and two-day shipping matter more than “upload everything from Amazon.”

In 2026 the US Marketplace remains open to sellers incorporated in a published list of countries (including China, the US, UK, Japan, India, Vietnam, and others named on the New-Seller Savings page). WFS Cross Border Imports can move ocean freight from selected China, Vietnam, and India ports into Walmart fulfillment centers if you already use WFS and the account is in good standing. Fees and eligibility still move — re-read Seller Center, not a blog screenshot.

Core features and advantages

Seller Center and catalog selling

Seller Center is the console: business verification, payouts, listings, orders, ads (Walmart Connect), and WFS. After you apply, onboarding is business verification (legal name, entity type, ID, country-specific documents), payout setup (Marketplace Wallet or an approved third-party provider — you have 30 days or the account is declined), market details, fulfillment, then catalog. You can import listings from another marketplace via Express setup (Versori), use APIs / a solution provider, or upload in Seller Center.

GTIN is the default. Private-label or handmade SKUs without a product ID need a GTIN exemption, not a fake barcode. New sellers sit on a New Seller Payment Hold after go-live; the length depends on country of incorporation. That hold is part of the cash-flow model, not a glitch.

WFS fulfillment

WFS is Walmart’s FBA analogue: you send inventory to Walmart fulfillment centers; Walmart picks, packs, ships (typically two-day on eligible items), and handles much of the customer service and store returns. There is no WFS signup or monthly subscription. Official WFS fee tables (Marketplace Learn, last updated May 2026; rates described as effective April 2025) charge a per-unit fulfillment fee by shipping weight and a monthly storage fee by cubic foot.

Standard fulfillment examples from that table: $3.45 at ≤1 lb, $4.95 at 2 lb, $5.45 at 3 lb, then $5.75 + $0.40 per lb above 4 lb through 20 lb. Apparel, hazmat, items under $10, and oversize add extras. Storage is $0.75 per cubic foot per month from January–September; in October–December inventory stored more than 30 days adds $1.50. Long-term storage (effective 30 June 2026) rises to $2.25 per cu ft at 366–450 days and $7.50 beyond 450 days. Use the WFS Cost Estimator on your real carton, not the one-pound row.

International sellers using WFS still clear US customs unless they enroll in Walmart Cross Border - Imports. You need a US returns address if you are not on WFS.

Referral fees and seller incentives

Referral fees are a percentage of the total sales price (item plus shipping and other charges). Walmart’s public FAQ describes the range as 6% to 15% by category; the live Referral Fee Schedule for Contract Categories (Marketplace Learn, updated March 2026) is more granular — for example Personal Computers 6%, many home/toys/office rows 15%, Apparel tiered 5% / 10% / 15% by price, Jewelry 20% on the portion up to $250 then 5%. Confirm the row for your contract category in Seller Center; do not reuse a remembered Amazon 15%.

New-Seller Savings (2 February 2026–31 January 2027) can discount referral fees and credit WFS/ads after go-live if you opt in. Other item incentives exist; they usually do not stack — read the live program terms.

Supported platforms

This is Walmart.com (US) Marketplace, with additional Walmart markets onboarded from Seller Center where offered (Canada WFS uses a different fee card). It is not Amazon, eBay, Target Plus, or a Shopify app. Multi-channel fulfillment from WFS inventory exists as Walmart Multichannel Solutions for some sellers. Ads are Walmart Connect, not Amazon Ads.

Who it's for

  • Amazon sellers adding a second US door: same physical goods, new GTIN/content work, WFS inbound instead of (or beside) FBA.
  • Small and mid-size brands with GS1 barcodes, competitive landed cost, and enough volume to justify a US FC.
  • China/Vietnam/India factories that can pass business verification and either use WFS Cross Border Imports or a US 3PL.
  • Skip it if you only have unbranded no-GTIN lots, cannot staff two-day shipping, or expected a consumer “open a Walmart shop” flow.

Concrete use case: a Dongguan home-goods seller already on FBA applies via walmartmarketplace.cn, completes verification with the business license and legal-rep ID, opts into New-Seller Savings after go-live, converts the hero SKU to WFS, and runs the Cost Estimator on the actual 6 lb carton before the first ocean booking. If referral + WFS already eat the Amazon-style margin, the listing is not a “test channel.”

Pricing and value

There is no monthly Walmart Marketplace subscription. Cost stack: category referral fee + (seller-fulfilled shipping or WFS fulfillment/storage/returns) + optional Walmart Connect + inbound freight. WFS return processing starts at $4.70 for ≤1 lb on the same 2026 table.

Value is Walmart.com demand plus store returns, not cheaper ads. Model WFS on dimensional weight (cu in / 139, plus 0.25 lb pack, round up). Re-check marketplacelearn.walmart.com before you price.

Community feedback

r/WalmartSellers and Amazon-seller threads that mention Walmart are consistent: slower catalog than Amazon, GTIN and content rejections, WFS prep/label chargebacks, and Buy Box pressure from Walmart’s own 1P offer. The same operators still add Walmart because US retail traffic is real and there is no $39.99/month gate. Chinese seller media (雨果网 and similar) focus on verification docs, payment holds, and WFS inbound from Yantian/Ningbo — not “easy open.”

Competitive positioning

Amazon still wins on selection search and FBA tooling. Walmart wins on no monthly fee, WFS two-day badges, and shoppers who already think in Walmart.com. eBay is better for used, parts, and auctions. Target’s marketplace is a separate application with a smaller 3P footprint. None of those are a Walmart listing tool.

Alternatives

  • Amazon — Seller Central and FBA if Prime demand is the first P&L.
  • eBay — auction and long-tail catalog without a Walmart GTIN bar.
  • Target — another US retail door when you already sell into mass retail.

Limitations

Approval is not instant and not guaranteed. Payment holds tie up cash. WFS long-term storage from June 2026 punishes dead inventory. Referral tables differ by market. You compete with Walmart 1P. International inbound is customs + labeling, not a black-box “send to China warehouse.” Seller-fulfilled accounts that miss ship-speed standards lose the Buy Box to WFS.

Verdict

Use Walmart Marketplace as a second US channel when you already have barcodes, unit economics after 15%-class referral + WFS, and a plan for two-day delivery. Do not treat walmart.com as a shopping SEO page or as a dropship sandbox.

Next step: read marketplace.walmart.com and the live WFS / referral guides, then apply in Seller Center (China: walmartmarketplace.cn) only after the Cost Estimator works on real dimensions.
