Overview
Etsy is a marketplace for handmade goods, vintage, craft supplies, and digital downloads — not a general merchandise dump. This entry is for makers and small brands who want to sell cross-border from Shop Manager, not for shoppers browsing gifts. You open a shop at etsy.com/sell; the consumer storefront is etsy.com.
The policy wall is the point. Factory-new, trademark-risky, or dropshipped catalog goods get pulled. If your plan is “same 500 SKUs as Amazon,” stop here and use a general marketplace or an independent store. If you actually make, curate vintage, or sell supplies to makers, Etsy still concentrates gift and search demand you will not get from a cold Shopify URL.
Fees stack in public documents. The Fees & Payments Policy (updated 13 February 2026) charges $0.20 USD per listing (four-month term, auto-renew unless you switch to manual) and a 6.5% transaction fee on item price plus shipping and gift wrap. Payment processing is extra and varies by bank-country on the Etsy Payments Policy (updated 31 July 2026). A one-time shop set-up fee may apply; the amount is shown during onboarding, not as a single global number. China, Japan, and several other countries receive payouts through Payoneer, with Payoneer’s own withdrawal fees on top.
Core features and advantages
Shop Manager and what you are allowed to sell
Opening a shop: Etsy account, shop name, language/currency, payout method, identity checks, then listings. Shop Manager is the ops console (orders, messages, listings, stats, Etsy Ads). Listings need original photos, attributes, and shipping profiles. Production partners are allowed when disclosed; undisclosed mass production is how shops get suspended.
Cross-border sellers should set shipping profiles by destination, decide DDP vs buyer-paid duties, and keep processing times honest. From 1 July 2026 Etsy help notes that goods into the EU from outside the EU face VAT plus an interim customs charge (help text cites €3 per item on sub-€150 orders, depending on how you ship). US sales tax is often collected by Etsy as marketplace facilitator; that does not remove your own VAT/IOSS obligations when you ship from China or the EU.
Fee stack and Offsite Ads
Official listing and transaction numbers are above. Help Center processing examples: United States 3% + $0.25 USD, United Kingdom 4% + £0.20, China 6.5% + $0.30 USD. Always open the live country table — it changes. Regulatory operating fees apply in some countries (help article lists, among others, UK 0.48%, France 1.14%, Canada 0.50%). Currency conversion can add another line when listing currency ≠ payout currency.
Offsite Ads charge 15% of attributed orders if trailing-12-month sales are under $10,000 (you can opt out in that band) and 12% once you have ever crossed $10,000 — then you cannot leave. Cap is $100 per attributed order. This is the fee new shops underestimate.
Optional: Etsy Plus at $10 USD/month (15 listing credits and $5 ads credit per cycle). Pattern is Etsy’s hosted extra site; listing fees for Pattern-only items differ. Independent-store teams usually outgrow Pattern toward a real DTC platform.
Payouts for non-US sellers
Etsy Payments is available in a published country list (US, UK, EU members, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and others). Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Egypt, Japan, India, South Korea, Thailand, UAE, and more onboard via Payoneer; Etsy sends USD to the Payoneer account, then you withdraw locally. Holds and reserve policies apply if Etsy sees dispute risk. Instant transfer exists for eligible US sellers only, with a fee shown at transfer time.
Supported platforms
Etsy.com plus iOS/Android apps. Local Etsy domains are storefront skins on the same shop. It is not Amazon, eBay, or Walmart. Integrations exist for shipping labels and some ERPs; they do not relax handmade policy. Pattern is optional, not a replacement for SHOPLINE or Shopify.
Who it's for
- Makers and small studios (solo to a few production partners) selling jewelry, textiles, prints, custom goods.
- Vintage and supply shops that can document age or sell to other makers.
- Cross-border sellers in Etsy Payments or Payoneer countries who will price shipping and duties, not just the item.
- Skip it if the catalog is factory generic, if you refuse Offsite Ads after $10k, or if you need B2B carton quantities (use a wholesale market).
Concrete use case: a Hangzhou jewelry studio opens an Etsy shop, pays the onboarding set-up fee shown on screen, lists 30 SKUs at $0.20 each, prices a $28 pendant with tracked shipping so that 6.5% + China processing (6.5% + $0.30) + Payoneer withdrawal still leave labor cost, and keeps Offsite Ads off until they understand attributed orders. They do not upload the same Alibaba set they sell on Amazon.
Pricing and value
No monthly fee on the standard shop (Plus is optional). You pay to list whether or not it sells. On a US shop, a $25 item with $5 shipping is roughly $0.20 + 6.5% of $30 + 3% + $0.25 before ads. On a China Payoneer shop the processing line is higher and withdrawal is extra — model it in Shop Manager, do not copy a US blog calculator.
Value is gift search and Etsy’s audience, not cheap selling. Once Offsite Ads lock on, effective take-rate jumps on those orders. If ads plus processing erase handmade margin, the shop is a brand billboard, not a P&L.
Community feedback
r/EtsySellers is blunt: Offsite Ads after $10k, search saturation, more ads to stay visible, and handmade enforcement that feels uneven. Positive threads still treat Etsy as the default discovery channel for custom and craft. Chinese and Japanese sellers add Payoneer timing, currency conversion, and 2026 EU duty changes as the operational pain — not the $0.20 listing fee.
Competitive positioning
eBay takes used and general catalog; it will not market you as a maker. Amazon is FBA volume. SHOPLINE/Shopify is the DTC site you own when Etsy traffic is rented. Etsy’s remaining job is being found for handmade and vintage search. It is a channel, not your only store.
Alternatives
- eBay — vintage and used without Etsy’s handmade production rules.
- Amazon — if the SKU is a standard catalog good and you need FBA scale.
- SHOPLINE — independent multilingual storefront when you want to own checkout and not rent Etsy ads.
Limitations
Handmade/vintage policy will close a wholesale dump. Fees stack (listing + 6.5% + processing + optional ads + conversion). Offsite Ads become mandatory after the $10k lifetime threshold. Payoneer countries add withdrawal cost and USD settlement. EU/UK VAT and 2026 duty rules sit on the seller. Etsy does not run WFS/FBA-style fulfillment.
Verdict
Open Etsy if you are actually a maker or vintage dealer going cross-border and you can price the full fee stack plus shipping. Do not open it as a second Amazon. Keep Offsite Ads off while you are under $10k unless you have measured the attributed orders.
Next step: start at etsy.com/sell, read etsy.com/legal/fees and the Payments processing table for your bank country, then list only goods that survive a handmade/vintage review.
