Overview

Bitly is Bitly, Inc.’s link-management platform. Cross-border sellers use it to compress long Shopify, email, and social URLs into bit.ly/... and then see which channel actually got the click. The company now sells a Connections Platform of short links, QR Codes, and landing pages—not a leftover “free shortener.” The free tier is 5 links and 2 QR Codes per month with no click/scan history. Channel reporting lives on paid plans.

The seller problem it solves is measurement off-Amazon: the same product or landing page in Instagram, TikTok, Klaviyo, and SMS needs a distinct tracked URL. It is not an ERP and it will not calculate ad ROAS. Amazon Associates policy says you must not use a shortening service in a way that makes it unclear the click goes to an Amazon Site. Amazon OneLink also does not redirect third-party shortened links. For Amazon Attribution, keep the official tagged URL; use Bitly on your storefront or campaign page.

The public bit.ly domain is frequently flagged in WeChat, some email gateways, and social spam filters. If the audience is in China or a WeChat private domain, a Bitly public link is a poor default—use a branded domain or a China-hosted shortener with ICP.

Core features and advantages

Click analytics, UTM, and campaigns

Paid plans keep history: 30 days on Core, 120 days on Growth, 1 year on Premium, 2 years on Enterprise. Country-level data and CSV export start on Growth; city and device breakdowns are Premium. A UTM builder ships from Core; UTM presets from Growth. Campaign grouping is Premium. Concrete use: for a Black Friday Shopify drop, mint one Bitly per Meta, Google, and email variant with UTMs, then compare country and referrer instead of a single session total.

QR Codes and landing pages

Free includes 2 QR Codes and 2 Bitly-branded pages per month. Core adds logos and advanced styling; Growth adds bulk create (10 codes / 100 links per upload). That is the packaging, trade-show, and carton-insert workflow—test the scan destination and WeChat behavior before you print.

API, extensions, and enterprise controls

API quotas: 1,000 requests/month on Free, 5,000 Core, 25,000 Growth, 50,000 Premium. Browser extensions (Chrome, Edge, Firefox) and iOS/Android apps are on all tiers. Multi-user permissions, SSO, webhooks, and a 99.99% uptime SLA sit on Enterprise. Bitly Assist (AI create-and-explain) is included from Core; Bitly states customer data is not used to train models.

Supported platforms

Bitly is not tied to one marketplace admin. Sellers typically wire it to Shopify, email tools, ad managers, and self-hosted landers. It is not a Seller Central or Amazon Attribution replacement: OneLink will not geo-redirect a third-party short link, and a wrapper that strips query tags kills Attribution. Inside WeChat, bit.ly often shows a risk interstitial.

Who it's for

  • Solo / small teams: free is enough to try a handful of links; pay Core (annual) if you need 30-day click history.
  • Mid-size DTC and brands: Growth is the first tier with a complimentary custom domain and bulk create.
  • Agencies / enterprise: Premium or quoted Enterprise for SSO, longer retention, and volume.
  • Skip it if you only run Amazon on-site ads, need WeChat-safe opens, or still expect a generous free analytics tier.

Concrete use case: put three Bitly links on a summer sale—email, Instagram bio, and a box QR—all pointing at your Shopify discount URL. Leave Amazon outbound on Attribution or amzn.to.

Pricing and value

Verified 2026-09-06 on bitly.com/pages/pricing:

  • Free: $0; 5 links, 2 QR Codes, 2 pages / month; unlimited clicks; no data history.
  • Core: $10/month billed annually ($120/year), annual only; 100 links, 5 codes, 30 days of data.
  • Growth: $29/month annual ($348) or $35 monthly; 500 links, complimentary custom domain, 120 days of data.
  • Premium: $199/month annual ($2,388) or $300 monthly; 3,000 links, 1 year of data, city/device metrics.
  • Enterprise: custom.

Annual billing is advertised as up to 34% off. For most small export shops, Core is “see the clicks”; branded domains start at Growth and cost more than shorteners that include a custom domain earlier. Confirm live numbers before you subscribe.

Community feedback

On r/webdev and r/gamedev, Bitly is still the default name, and also the domain people associate with spam. Users complain the free cap (5 links) makes it a demo, and that bit.ly looks untrustworthy next to a branded slug. Support is the Help Center (ticketed for paid accounts) and @BitlyCSChannel—not a public support inbox. Seller forums rarely treat Bitly as a sourcing tool; it shows up in DTC and SMS character-count threads.

Competitive positioning

Bitly’s edge is analytics depth, QR/landing pages, and enterprise plumbing. The gaps are the free quota, the Growth paywall for branded domains, and public-domain reputation. Rebrandly treats custom domains as the product. TinyURL still shortens without an account. Cuttly packs link-in-bio and surveys into lower tiers. Xiaomark is the China/WeChat option.

Alternatives

  • Rebrandly — custom domains from the free plan, if you do not want bit.ly in the URL.
  • TinyURL — no-account shortening and links that do not expire by default.
  • Cuttly — a larger free quota plus link-in-bio and surveys.

Limitations

Free has no history. Core is annual-only. Branded domains start at Growth. bit.ly is often blocked or flagged in WeChat and some social apps. Do not use it to obscure an Amazon destination; OneLink ignores third-party shorts. It does not ingest ad spend or Seller Central.

Verdict

In 2026, Bitly is for sellers already running storefront, email, and print campaigns who need click split by channel—not for anyone hunting a free anonymous shortener. Use Amazon’s own Attribution URLs on Amazon; use a filed Chinese domain or Xiaomark inside WeChat.

Next step: check bitly.com/pages/pricing. Use Free to test shortening; add Core or Growth only if you need history and a branded domain.
