Overview
Photoroom is an AI editor built for product photos, not for posters. You shoot on a phone or drop in a factory JPEG, remove the background, drop the SKU on pure white or a generated scene, add a shadow so it does not float, and export the sizes Amazon, Shopify, eBay, and TikTok Shop expect. Paris-founded in 2019, it now sells a web/mobile app, batch tools, a Shopify integration on higher plans, and a separate API used by marketplaces and apps.
For cross-border sellers the job is repetitive: every new SKU needs a compliant main image plus a few lifestyle secondaries, in more than one aspect ratio, without booking a studio. Photoroom is the packshot layer. Layout-heavy A+ modules and social carousels still belong in Canva. One-click background-only jobs can stay on remove.bg.
Core features and advantages
Background removal and white mains
This is the feature sellers actually pay for. Edge quality on apparel, hard goods, and most packaging is consistently better than Canva’s remover in independent 2026 reviews. Amazon’s main-image rule (pure white, RGB 255,255,255, product filling the frame, no badges) maps to a white-background export plus padding. Do a visual check on glass, chrome, mesh, and flyaway hair — those still fail silently.
Scenes, shadows, and virtual models
AI Backgrounds Studio, relight, preset or adjustable shadows, ghost mannequin, and virtual / fashion models turn one cutout into lifestyle secondaries and lookbook frames. Use generated scenes on secondary slots and ads, not as the Amazon hero, unless the marketplace allows it. Shadows are what stop the “sticker on a void” look that buyers bounce off.
Batch, Shopify, and API
Batch mode is the point once you have more than a handful of SKUs. Paid app plans advertise monthly export caps (Pro 1,000, Max 3,000, Ultra 10,000 on the 2026-09-06 pricing table) with a larger AI-credit pool for generative tools. Shopify sync starts at Max. The API is billed separately: official docs still list Remove Background at about $0.02 per image (Basic) and Image Editing / genAI at about $0.10 (Plus), with enterprise volume from hundreds of thousands of images a year. App credits and API credits are not the same wallet.
Spaces and brand kit
Paid plans include Spaces (shared work, up to 50 seats on self-serve tiers) and a brand kit so the same shadow and crop rules apply across operators. That matters more than another AI slider once two people are editing the same catalog.
Supported platforms
- Amazon — white mains, secondaries, A+ stills. Photoroom publishes Amazon-oriented presets; you still own policy (text on main image, infographics on hero, etc.).
- Shopify — direct integration on Max+; otherwise export and upload.
- eBay, Etsy, TikTok Shop, Shopee, Temu — resize to each channel; watch on-image text and lifestyle-as-main rules.
- Ads / social — square and 9:16 from the same cutout.
- Developers — REST API and an MCP option; SOC 2 Type 2 is claimed on enterprise pages.
Apps: iOS, Android, web. API is independent of the Pro/Max/Ultra subscription.
Who it's for
- Solo sellers and resellers who shoot on a phone and need Amazon-legal mains today. Pro is the usual start.
- Small brands putting 50–300 SKUs online with one designer bottleneck — Max, for batch, video (where included), and Shopify.
- Catalog / enterprise teams automating intake from the factory — Ultra or API/Enterprise.
- Skip it as a replacement for Canva if the work is A+ comparison tables and multilingual size charts. Skip the mobile weekly SKU if you did not mean to subscribe; billing complaints cluster there.
Concrete use case: 80 private-label SKUs, factory photos on a grey table. Batch-remove, export Amazon white mains at the required pixel size, generate two lifestyle secondaries per SKU for A+ and Shopify, keep a third 1:1 for Meta. One person finishes the catalog over a weekend instead of a studio day plus a retoucher week. Transparent bottles get a manual pass before upload.
Pricing and value
Official photoroom.com/pricing on 2026-09-06 showed Pro / Max / Ultra / Enterprise. Core tools (background removal, retouch, product fixer, preset shadows, fill, expand, enhance) are included on paid plans within fair use. Generative tools draw AI credits (Pro 8,000 / Max 25,000 / Ultra 75,000 per month on the comparison table). Exports are capped as above.
Dollar prices vary by region and by monthly vs annual toggle. Official locale pages around the same week showed annual-equivalent Pro about US$7.50/month, Max about US$20.99/month, Ultra about US$82.50/month, with higher monthly list (third parties still quote Pro ~$12.99, Max ~$34.99, Ultra ~$99). Enterprise is custom (SLA, SSO, visual QA). API starts around $20/month Basic and $100/month Plus on Photoroom’s API pricing page, per-image as above.
Confirm the live cart. Credits and exports reset each cycle; hitting 100% pauses exports until renewal or upgrade.
Community feedback
Resellers on Reddit (Poshmark, eBay, Amazon) and 2026 review sites call the cutout best-in-class versus Canva and remove.bg, and they like Amazon-oriented presets. Recurring complaints: mobile weekly billing traps, slow or bot-like support on billing tickets, AI scenes that look like AI on a large monitor, and transparent/glass SKUs eating product edges. Trustpilot and Reddit both split between “pays for itself in time” and “cannot reach a human about a charge.”
First-party 2026 brand notes (hundreds of millions of users, billions of images/year) are marketing, not an audit.
Competitive positioning
Photoroom wins the packshot. Canva wins layout, type, and A+ modules. Online cutouts / remove.bg wins “I only need a transparent PNG.” Pixelcut and similar apps compete on mobile reselling. Photoshop still wins jewelry and glass. A common stack is Photoroom → Canva → ads tool.
Alternatives
- Canva — listing infographics, A+, ads, and social layouts on top of the packshot.
- Online Background Removal — faster path if you only need a cutout (remove.bg).
Limitations
- Not a page-layout tool. Size charts with six callouts still go to Canva.
- Glass, chrome, tulle, and busy backgrounds need a human look.
- Export and AI-credit caps are real; API is a second bill.
- Lifestyle scenes can fail marketplace “main image” rules.
- Support quality is uneven on billing.
- Free / low tiers may watermark or limit commercial use — check the current free terms before you upload to Amazon.
Verdict
If listing photos are the bottleneck, Photoroom is the right specialist: cutout, white, scene, batch, then stop. Keep Canva for everything with type. Next step: run a free trial from photoroom.com/pricing on your hardest SKU (glass or hair), export an Amazon-sized white main, and only then pick Pro vs Max against your monthly export count.
