Overview
Baidu Translate launched on 30 June 2011. For China-based cross-border teams the first fact that matters is reachability: the website, desktop app, phone app and Chrome extension work on mainland broadband without routing Google Translate through an international path. Daily use is drafting Chinese titles into English, Japanese or Korean; reading Amazon and DTC tickets; scanning factory PDFs; photographing foreign carton marks. Bookmark fanyi.baidu.com/home. The bare host fanyi.baidu.com/ returned 404 on 2026-09-06; the working bench lives at /mtpe-individual/multimodal. Contact: translate-service@baidu.com.
It is not a multilingual SEO layer and it is not the European-pair favourite in seller chats. Language URLs belong to Weglot or marketplace Markets. For German, French and Spanish hero copy, communities still more often start with DeepL. Baidu’s slot is 200-plus languages, tens of thousands of directions, documents/images/speech/web on one account, plus an open platform billed per character.
Consumer text and basic documents can be tried without a login. Glossaries, translation memory, team seats and API access need personal or enterprise verification, or the smart-translation enterprise SKU. A paste box is not an ERP quota.
Core features and advantages
Text, LLM modes and terms
Web and desktop offer auto-detect, bilingual view and selection translate. The workbench adds glossaries, TM, a knowledge base and “instruction / deep thinking” LLM toggles. Typical seller flow: 200 Chinese characters of bullets into English, with MOQ and FBM locked so 50 ASINs do not invent three translations. The free page has no enforceable shared glossary; that lands in the verified API. Spot-check European pairs — do not ship a German listing unreviewed.
Documents, images and desktop popup
Official copy says document translation keeps layout across common office formats. Photo translation uses OCR; the camera page has cited about 17 languages. Desktop value is cross-app selection, screenshot translate and hotkeys while a supplier quote is on screen. A research CSV is the wrong file type. Human translation (the China Foreign Languages Publishing Administration line) is a separate invoice.
Open-platform API
General Translate API (api.fanyi.baidu.com) bills source characters. 2026 docs list CNY 49 per million. Unverified Standard: about 50,000 characters/month, 1 QPS, ~28 common languages. Personal Advanced: 1 million/month, 10 QPS. Enterprise Premium: 2 million/month, 100 QPS, 200-plus languages and glossary. The LLM text endpoint is billed separately, with a test grant after verification. Volume quotes: translate_api@baidu.com. Enterprise smart translation also sells per-seat plans (public pages have shown CNY 99/user/month, five-seat annual minimum). Confirm on the enterprise console.
Supported platforms
Baidu Translate is a translator, not a store. Paste output into Amazon, Shopee or a Shopify admin. Desktop is Windows/macOS; the app covers camera and simultaneous-interpretation entries; a page plugin exists. It does not sync Seller Central or emit /de directories. Domain engines (biomedical, electronics) help 3C specs; they do not guarantee Amazon compliance sentences.
Who it's for
- Mainland solo sellers reading English tickets and drafting EN titles. The free page is usually enough.
- Small teams that need desktop popup plus a shared glossary — verify and take API or enterprise.
- Mid-size sellers and agencies wiring the general API into research or ticket scripts, using enterprise verification for 2 million characters and 100 QPS.
- Skip it if you sit overseas with a non-Chinese source, only want DE/FR polish (DeepL), or need crawlable language URLs (Weglot).
Concrete case: a Hangzhou apparel shop uses Baidu at 9 a.m. to read a German complaint, confirm it is size not quality, then choose a template or an escalation. English titles can start here; hero DE ASINs go through DeepL; both glossaries lock brand and fabric.
Pricing and value
Consumer web and app basics are free. Membership / ad-removal SKUs live in client IAP (store listings show IAP; do not copy dollar prices into a cost model). The auditable schedule is the open platform:
- Standard / Advanced / Premium: 50k / 1M / 2M characters per month free, then CNY 49 per million
- LLM text: docs say CNY 49 per million, QPS 10, 1 million-character test grant
- Enterprise seats: public pages list a Team tier at CNY 99/user/month — confirm headcount floors and annual billing
For a small mainland team, Advanced’s 1 million characters often covers tickets and titles. Count characters before pouring 2,000 SKUs into the API.
Community feedback
Mainland operators treat Baidu as “the Google that opens.” Zhihu and seller WeChat: CJK is usable; long German marketing lines lose to DeepL; camera translate is for the warehouse, not A+. English Reddit is thin; r/ChineseLanguage uses it as a dictionary, not an FBA review. The open platform shows up more in developer circles (Zotero, ComfyUI prompt plugins) than in seller groups. Support is the site email, not a live ticket queue.
Competitive positioning
Baidu wins on mainland reach, language count and documents-plus-camera in one login. Youdao feels more like a dictionary, with fewer languages. Google Translate has longer tails and often fails on mainland broadband. DeepL still owns European-pair reputation. Alibaba Translate is an e-commerce engine plus cloud API, not the same “read the ticket” path.
Alternatives
- Youdao for popup lookup, dictionary and factory PDFs in China.
- DeepL for DE/FR/ES listings and tickets.
- Google Translate for long-tail languages and page compare off-mainland.
- Weglot when the store needs indexable language URLs.
Limitations
The apex domain 404s — a wrong bookmark looks like an outage. The free page cannot lock a team glossary. Camera languages are far fewer than 200-plus text pairs. Peak-hour throttling is third-party talk; Baidu does not publish a consumer SLA. Unverified API accounts see only ~28 languages. Machine output is not a compliance final. It does not publish a language version of your store.
Verdict
If the team is in China and every day starts with mail plus CJK drafts, install desktop or open the official workbench. For volume or terms, verify and use the API — stop pasting. Keep DeepL for European hero ASINs and Weglot for the storefront.
Next step: open fanyi.baidu.com/home, paste a live title; for scripts, check the Advanced 1-million-character grant on the open platform.
Data notes
Rechecked 2026-09-06 against fanyi.baidu.com/home (200-plus languages, multimodal and desktop/app entry points; apex 404), open-platform pricing (CNY 49 per million; 50k / 1M / 2M free tiers) and the 2011-06-30 launch date. monthlyVisits, domainRating and authorityScore are catalog placeholders, unverified. Enterprise seat prices and app IAP must be confirmed in each console. Consumer membership prices were not verified on a public rate card.
